Title: Summer Reading
Day of the week/Time: Varies based on staff schedule. Training is 30 minutes and happens every summer until all staff have been gone through the training.
Audience: Mandatory training for all staff every summer.
Goals: Staff will understand the importance of summer reading and be able to help to patrons who are participating.
Reasoning for Training: All staff need to be prepared to promote events during the summer and serve children who are participating in the summer reading program. Although volunteers are handling most of the sign ups and prizes for summer reading, since it’s a busy season regular staff need to be able to step in and help.
Curriculum: The reasons behind summer reading, to help children keep up their skills during the summer and to encourage families to visit the library during the summer, will be reviewed. The rules of the game and how children are awarded prizes is discussed. Finally, the special events that happen over the summer will be highlighted.
Supplies: Summer reading promotional materials, fliers with events happening over the summer.
Staff: 1 youth librarian or library assistant.
