Title: Music and Movement

Day of the week/Time: Sunday, 2-2:45, 1 time a month

Ages: 0-2

Goals: Provide a program that allows families to experience the fun of music and movement, while also learning about the benefits of singing to help develop early literacy skills. Educate caregivers about how to add songs into play and what resources are available at the library.

Reasoning for Program: While all storytimes involve music this storytime has the focus on music. By focusing on music it showcases the benefits it can bring to children. Caregivers may not feel comfortable, or know how to sing with their children. This program will give them models and also materials they can check out.

Activities: Library staff will lead children through singing, dancing, and playing instruments  (such as egg shakers or tambourines) for about 6 songs. The songs will be interactive and also allow for movement or finger play. Throughout the songs library staff will talk about the benefits of singing and music. 10 minutes will be allotted at the end for families to explore the instruments and dancing independently. CDs that are available for check out at the library will be played during this time. Caregivers will be given a flier with the songs used during the program, including the lyrics and hand motions, so they can continue the activity at home.

Supplies: CD player, library CDs to play during the program as well as enough for caregivers to check out at the end, instruments, fliers with songs.

Staff: 1 youth librarian or library assistant and 1 volunteer.

Community Partners: N/A

Budget: $0. Printing costs already in general library budget. CDs and instruments are already in the collection.
