Title: Make a Zine

Day of the week/Time: Sunday, 12-2

Ages: 5-10

Goals: Introduce children to the concept of zines. Form a partnership with an outside organization. Have children leave with their own handmade zine. Start a browsing zine collection based on the work of the patrons.

Reasoning for Program: Zines are a low cost way to get children involved in writing and publishing. By making their own zines children will use the skills of reading, writing, and talking if they choose to share their zine with the group. Writing their own zine will give them confidence in their skills and provide a creative outlet for their thoughts.

Activities: Volunteers from the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) will talk about zines and how to make them. The participants will then have time to make their own zine. There will be stations set up around the room with different craft supplies, such as magazine pictures to cut out and glue into zines, markers/coloring pencils to draw, story starters if children need help with ideas, and a binding station. An adult will be at each station to help the children. At the end of the session children will have a chance to make a copy of their zine to stay in the library for browsing, as well as share their zine with the rest of the group.

Supplies: Paper, markers, colored pencils, magazines, scissors, stapler, pens, pencils, crayons, stickers, story starter cards, and examples of zines.

Staff: The day of, 2 volunteers from the IPRC, 1 youth librarian, and I library assistant.

Community Partners: Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC)

Budget: $100 for supplies
