Title: Kindergarten Readiness

Day of the week/Time: Saturday, 12-2:30. Two Saturdays a month in June and July.

Ages: 4-5

Goals: Have a program that simulates what part of day in Kindergarten will be like.

Reasoning for Program: This program incorporates the literacy practices of reading, playing, singing, and writing. It allows families a chance to meet with a teacher before their children enter school and see what areas they may need to focus on prior to school.  

Activities: Children will participate in several activities that are similar to what they will do in Kindergarten. They will make a name tag. Sit on the floor and listen to several books and sing songs. They will participate in a craft activity with their caregiver that involves creating an alphabet book. Children will either just glue on letters and pictures or they can work with their caregiver to write a story that involves one of their favorite letters. There will be a break for snack time. Children will then have a choice of free play activities, such as blocks, a sensory bin, or pretend play. During the snack and free play time the Kindergarten teacher will talk about the skills that help children be successful in Kindergarten and what families can do to encourage these skills.  Finally, the librarian will lead the children in a book, song, and goodbye routine. The final half hour children will be allowed to continue free play and the teacher will be available to answer questions about school.

Supplies: Books from collection, craft supplies to make name tag and create book, toys for free play time, snacks.

Staff: 1 youth librarian and youth library assistant, Kindergarten teacher.

Community Partners: Kindergarten teacher from local elementary school.

Budget: $50 for snacks and craft supplies.
